WAR WAR WAR

The United States Declaration of War is more concerned with itself, the people, and government. On the other hand the German's response to the United States is they are so concerned with us and blockades they might come across or build.

Governments Secrets on the Loose!

By: Julia Gojlewicz

I believe the governments around the world should be truthful and honest, no matter how hard it might be, they should always be open about their issues and policies with us. WikiLeaks, a non-profit organisation that publishes unavailable documents from anonymous sources, posts videos of the dishonestly our government is pursuing. As much as I believe our government should be open, I do not think people should be publishing their activities without their knowledge of doing so.  "My convictions are unfaltering. I remain true to the ideals I have expressed. This circumstance shall not shake them. If anything this process has increased my determination that they are true and correct. We now know that Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and others are instruments of U.S. foreign policy. It’s not something we knew before. I am calling for the world to protect my work and my people from these illegal and immoral attacks," words from the founder of WikiLeaks; Julian Assange. Back when you lost your teeth as a child remember putting your teeth under a pillow? Remember the thrill of excitement you got in the morning finding that quarter or dollar bill in exchange that the Tooth Fairy had left for you. Now picture finding the truth that no special winged lady came to your bedroom that night. Sometimes the truth is better kept a secret.

Trench Warefare!

By the looks of the trailer for Gallipoli, it seems like the reason that the Great War (World War I) had the most deaths, was because, they used Trench Warfare. Trench Warfare; when opposing sides occupy trenches; usually very bloody, miserable, and endless.

I actually did a project on this two years ago and rein-acted it.

Boom Boom BANG.

I think Dogfight is a HORRIBLE method. Having to fly a plane AND shoot someone at the same time. Yeah... NO THANKS. I barley lasted 20 seconds playing that game, I can only imagine what it was like in real life. Unlike this video game you can not restart and try again one you died. You are actually dead, gone, done for.

Waitin' for the Love of a Travelin' Soldier...

Communicating today is much different then back in World War I. With only a letter for commuincation to their loved ones you never know if they are okay or not. Soldiers would die and send letters right before passing away, and their family would have no idea, thinking they are still fine from the letter they got just days before. A huge struggle for these soldiers was having the time to write out these letters and sending them. I did look at the letters and its horrible knowing many of them never came home, as they had promised they would. I believe the song Travelin' Soldier by The Dixie Chicks is a perfect example of the struggles with letters and loved ones the soldiers had.

So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I got no one to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you

So the letters came from an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart
It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of
He said when it's getting kinda rough over here
I think of that day sittin' down at the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for awhile

One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the Anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read but nobody really cared

On the Couch Vs In another Country. Take Your Pick

I do not believe video games cause violence, games like Call of Duty should be allowed to exist because it is educating everyone who plays it and letting them have fun at the same time. Honestly american history classes would be smart to have students play games like this while teaching them about world war I.  Call of Duty even encourages players to join the army and help fight for our rights. Although in real life we do not have a "reset button," video games should not be putting into players heads that they do. I do not believe that by playing you should just go out and kill others, but I do not think it persuades you to do such in any way.
For example, some of the nicest and kind hearted people I know play video games all the time, mainly Call of Duty and Halo. These kids would NEVER in a million years do anything to harm someone in reality. Truth is, they can go crazy while playing the game, yelling and screaming is necessary for them to have fun. I can generate you if you take away that controller you will see a whole different person right before your eyes.

Dear Diary...

Diseases are a major problem I keep having to face, such as Malaria, Yellow Fever, dysentery, typhoid, and dengue. I always have to stay healthy or there is that possibility I may lose my job. :( Not to mention this tropical heat is driving me crazy. When will the sun go away!?!?!? There are so many things we have to look out for such as Train derailments, falling from the trains, being crushed under land and mud slides, and suffication from noxious gases are the other ones. Geez and people think being a doctor is hard work....

Imperialism = Kidnapping

Imperialism; Stronger nations oppressing weaker nations.
To me imperialism reminds me of adults to babies. Adults are for the most part a lot stronger than babies and take control. If I had to pick an article that shows an example of imperialism I would have to say...
...........The Caylee Anthony Case.
Caylee Anthony disappeared in June 2008 and reported dead after a long search. Her skeletal remains were found near her home, it is said that Caylee's mother Casey Anthony was the murder and is now in jail for first degree murder charges. If you really think about it the poor little girl had no chance up against an adult (her mother). Caylee Anthony was the weaker nation up against a stronger nation.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas takes place during World War II. The story is told through the eyes of an eight year old boy named Bruno. Bruno is the son of the commandant at the concentration camp, which happens to be steps away from their new house. Not long after the family moves Bruno decides to adventure around his new lot. He runs into the prison camp where he meets a young Jewish boy named Shmuel.
Shmuel is dressed in striped pajamas and on the opposite side of the electric fence. Bruno is not allowed to see Shmuel but sneaks to see him secretly. By the control of Hitler (the strong nation) he has millions of soldiers keeping guard at the concentration camps, killing tons of Jews (the weaker nation). The jews have no control over their fate, you either have to follow the soldiers orders or you get shot. The concentration camp Shmuel was at was awful, the poor boy had to wear these dirty hideous striped outfits and do all the work around the camp. The camp was not even close to the way we picture camps now-a-days, it was dirty, scary, and dark. By the end of the story Bruno actually goes into the camp to be with his friend and ends up being mistaken as a jew and gets brought into the gas chamber with Shmuel. I believe this is an excellent example of a stronger nation oppressing a weaker nation; imperialism.

Blogging Assignments!!!!

I believe blogging assignments are much more convent and easier than regular pen and paper work that you have in many other classes. You are able to access websites and the touch of a button while doing your homework, you can also pretty much do it anywhere as long as theres a computer around. Blogging is new, different, and I like it!
The nice thing about blogging is you can pull up other websites while you are working to back up your facts you are stating. You no longer have the excuse of "I didn't know the history," because it is right in front of your face.

Another magnificent thing about blogging is you don't have to carry around your paper to do your work, you can just find any random computer and do it. There are so many options; your house, school, friends, or even the local library. Another plus side to this is you don't have to worry about paper getting torn or wrinkled. No longer can you say "my dog ate my homework."
In conclusion, Blogging is the best and so is this class!

Always look up to your elders

In many cases adults tend to tell their children "white lies" to keep them from knowing the scary truth behind it. Where as for history, that is exactly what they do. Younger kids hear these amazing stories such as the native americans and pilgrims celebrating Thanksgiving; they wear their little paper hats and feathers, and have a huge feast. The children believe that the pilgrims and native americans came together, became friends, and had a ginormous dinner. This story is completely and utterly wrong. They were most definitely not friends and the pilgrims killed the native americans. Honestly though, would you want to tell your little five year old daughter that? I believe it is right to not tell little kids the truth because it will most likely haunt them. That does not however mean our history books should lie to us, we should just merely learn about it as we get older and more mature.

Reconstruction vs Civil War

African Americans had a hard life through out the Reconstruction time period and the United States civil rights movement. After the Civil war the Reconstruction happen. Aferican Americans fought for their freedom during the civil war. During reconstruction they were technically free but there were strict rules they had to follow, such as taking literacy test before they voted. This act was not fair what so ever, since the aferican americans had no education they were not able to pass the test; meaning they could not vote. Even after the Aferican Americans were free there was still a lot of racisim. No one treated them equal.
Before the Civil War African Americans were slaves. Being a slave was horrible. They were treated like crap and practically were not even counted as human. Slaves made no salary for the hard work they put into their landowners property. If they did not complete a task correctly they would get terribly punished which usually led to physically abuse and even death. During the civil war African Americans actually went and fought for their freedom and won! After the civil war African Americans became free and no longer were used as slaves.
Instead of being slaves during Reconstruction, the African Americans worked in share cropping. "Sharecroppers were agricultural wage laborers who raised crops on farm plots owned by large landowners in the post–Civil War era. Both landless whites and blacks worked as sharecroppers, although the majority of sharecroppers were African Americans."

Textile Factory Workers

Life for the textile factory workers must have been extremely hard. They rarely ever slept, working day and night. The workers tend to fall asleep as they're sewing and dream. The poor workers were terribly hungry and talk of death, "the phantom of grisly bone." Not to mention, their hands were in pain and in horrible shape, being weary and worn.

Blogging as to Pen and Paper

Anyone will most likely tell you blogging is ten times better than doing homework with a pen and paper. It's much more convenient to our day and age in time. Usually students are on the computer talking to friends on Facebook, forgetting about their main priorities; homework. With blogging there really is no excuse not to do your work unless you don't understand how to answer the question. My only request with our blogs, is if they could relate a little more directly on what we are learning, even if that means some of our answers come straight through our notes.

All Time Favorite

My favorite blog topic for this quarter definitely has to be the Ellis Island one. I found this topic beyond interesting. After class the day we found out about ellisisland.org I literally looked it up as soon as possible. It was no surprise to see my ancestors were from Russia, but knowing the boat the traveled to the United States on, the day, and not to mention their age; extraordinary! I also felt like I really understood what the blog post was about, the question was easy to comprehend.

The Journey to the United States.

Looking at the pictures from Ellis Island back in the late 1890s and early 1900s, it is easy to tell that the immigrants coming to the United States were expecting a life changing experience. To come to a beautiful new land and have a great life. In most cases this was not true what so ever. Ellis Island was merely a mirage, with it's extraordinary gold featuring, passengers believed they were going to be rich. The journey to the United States was only the first of their troubles, being cramped in a boat with unknown others is no picnic. The poor people were so excited to get to the United States only to find misfortune.

Erwin E. Smith

Erwin E. Smith was a talented photographer who liked to take pictures of his friends and family doing daily activities. He enjoyed taking pictures of his two sisters, but his all time favorite model was himself. He used the pictures he took for the cover of brochures advertising his work. Erwin lived in Texas for all of his life, the location he lived at had approximatively 5,000 residents and was a trading hot spot.

Through Hollywood's ideal vision, cowboys would have perfect teeth, dusty, handsome faces, but un-torn clothing and a perfect physique, but the real deal was nothing like this. Erwin E. Smith states that the cowboys definitely were not perfect, even judging by their clothes. They basically would wear long sleeved cotton or wool shirts and work pants. They would usually wear vests to carry small objects. Cowboys used hats and kerchiefs for many reasons apart from their attire.

Hollywood gives the idea that men in the wild west only had one important piece of equipment, and that was his gun. In many cases this is not true, the most important was his horse. By using his horse he can travel great distances. For example in Hollywood hits like "Bedtime Stories" Adam Sandler refers to a horse as a mustang, which back in the wild west wild horses truly were called that.

Cowhand Equipment

Rocky Racoon

The Beatles very much portray the wild west throughout the song "Rocky Racoon." Not to mention the entire song has a wild west tone to the music. The vocabulary in the song deals with the wild west as well, singing about "saloons and showdown" Now a days, no one would ever go to a saloon and start a showdown, then attempt to shoot someone. This piece is not completely accurate because the chances of someone who plans to shoot someone and missing, without the other person knowing they are coming, are very slim.

Gunsmoke

After watching an episode of Gun-smoke I am somewhat able to analyze the stereotypes in this show. There are the cowboys who are big and bad, not afraid to pull out a gun and fight for what they believe in. Then there are the Indians who people don't care for as much. Such as in the episode "Saloon", the men decide to manhandle the poor girl, after the main character Joe comes to her rescue and threatens the men.

Oregon Trail

This old game really connects with learning about history because it takes you back in time as you have to play a character that lives in this era. As complicated as this game was to start, once you begin it can really get interesting. I played as a farmer, and I got to see the challenges they come across. Such as, selecting what items to buy and at what times, debating on the right choices to make, stops to take, and who to bring.

Typical Stereotypes

I think stereotypes are so widely known by so many in our nation, because of the environment we live in. For example, we go to school everyday and meet up with our friends, most commonly at lunch. As you sit down at your usually table I can guarantee you probably sit with the same group of friends everyday, who share somewhat of the same interests as you. Now you may not look at it this way but everyone around you does, such as if you are a football player, and you sit with other players, most likely people will call your groups "the jocks." Same goes for cheerleaders, theater kids, and even those in the band. Now there are also stereotypes on the races of people. I believe that too is grown from your environment, and even how you are raised.

"That government is best which governs least"

I Agree with Thoreau who said, "that government is best which governs least," because a government that is used soley for one particular purpose usually prevents chaos that could possibly come from it.

History does matter

I believe history matters in the world, without history how would we be where we are today? If we did not know our background research, we would be reliving past problems over and over again. History helps build who we are, for example if there were still no woman rights, we would not have these amazing ladies leading us today, or helping us in times of need.

What is the lie commonly agreed upon?

When Voltaire said "history is the lie commonly agreed upon," he meant that anything written in a history book could be a lie, but because it is a written document everyone assumes it must be accurate. The truth is our very own history books are written by the winners of every event in the past, do you honestly think the winners are going to bad mouth themselves? For example in ever war you only get the winners perspective, because by the time history is written the losers are dead.
