By the looks of the trailer for Gallipoli, it seems like the reason that the Great War (World War I) had the most deaths, was because, they used Trench Warfare. Trench Warfare; when opposing sides occupy trenches; usually very bloody, miserable, and endless.
I actually did a project on this two years ago and rein-acted it.
